APA Officials Honored by OACC
Wednesday, June 01, 2011Oakland Mayor Jean Quan and OACC Board President Stewart Chen were among 31 Asian and Pacific Islander American elected officials honored late May by the Oakland Asian Cultural Center. In addition to honoring the political strides Asian Americans have made in local politics, the event also served as a fundraiser
For the first time ever, both cities of Oakland and San Francisco selected Asian Americans as their mayors and Asian and Pacific Islander Americans won elections in every one of the nine counties that make up the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Historical milestones such as these inspire commemoration and recognition for promoting the voice and leadership of Asian Americans, We think this is an important juncture in the history of Asian Americans in the Bay Area.
The May 25 event coincided with Asian Pacific Heritage Month.
Mona Pasquil, the appointments secretary for Governor Jerry Brown, emceed the event, while local journalist and historian Bill Wong spoke of the struggle and recent emergence of Asian Americans as a political force in California.
Sponsors included Kaiser Permanente, East Bay Municipal Utility District, Family Bridges, IBEW Local 595 and Lotus Bloom Child and Family Resource Center.
