Concentric Mandala Project

Smaller 6' version on view February 16th. Large version returns March 1

OACC invited you, the Oakland Chinatown community, to contribute to an exciting new 14' concentric floor mandala created by artist Nancy Hom in the lobby of OACC. "Mandala" is a Sanskrit word that loosely means circle. It represents wholeness and integration. "Concentric" means to have a common center. In helping to create the mandala, a person who participated offered his or her own perspective and also became part of a larger statement. By participating in the making of this mandala, we creatively expressed ourselves individually and collectively, unified by our connection to Oakland Chinatown. Here are some of the ways people contributed to this exciting work of art:

1)    Donated your multiples of items that are identical in size that represent the cultures of Oakland Chinatown to them.

2)    Collected business cards from businesses in and around Oakland Chinatown, and 4"x6" postcards of events, or 4"x6" photos of Oakland Chinatown. Deliver to OACC.

3)    Donated scraps of colorful paper, fabric, beads, and other small interesting ethnic items to make artwork.

4)    Help fold origami cranes (6"x6" paper), Chinese junks, paper flowers, and other items that represent Oakland Chinatown's cultures.

5)    Drew, collaged and/or painted impressions of Oakland Chinatown on vertical 4 1/2" x 6" cards available at OACC.

6)    Told other people about this project.
