The Oakland Asian Cultural Center brought in the New Year of 4707 (2010 in the solar calendar) with its annual Lunar New Year Festival. Elements of Chinese, Korean, Mongolian, Vietnamese, and Philippine cultures were featured in the daylong celebration on February 20, 2010. Activities included cultural art activities for families and performances from OACC teachers/artists and their students.
THE EVENT was FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!
The day’s activities included:
Cultural Art Activities for Families
12:00pm-1:00pm
- An exhibition of Chinese Painting and Drawing, curated by our very own visual arts teacher Shu Yi Liu.
- Fruit Carving Demonstration by Art Chef, Jimmy Zhang.
- Japanese Paper Craft Demonstration by Mikio Sakuma.
- Chinese Painting and Calligraphy activities by Shu Yi Liu.
- Activity table by the American Center of Philippine Arts.
- Youth lead Go workshop presented by the Bay Area Go Players Association.
Performances
1:00pm – 3:30pm
- The Ben Shaolin Kung Fu Lion Dance Team welcomed in the New Year with an original Lion Dance.
- A Korean Drumming Piece by Jamesori and Dohee Lee’s OACC students called Pangut.
- China’s Spirit Music Ensemble (CSME) performed a Guzheng piece called Mongolian Dance Melody, featuring 20 Guzhengs.
- Vietnamese American Community Center of the East Bay did a Vovinam (Vietnamese Marital Art) demonstration.
- Ger Youth Center performed a Mongolian Folk Dance called Zakhchin. Choreography by Narangerel.
- Qi Gong demonstrations with students and OACC teachers; the Buddhist Education Foundation (Shaolin Monks).
- A Korean Drumming piece by Dohee Lee Jamesori called Samulnori.
- CSME returned and do two Guzheng (Chinese Zither) pieces. Children’s Games – by the CSME Children’s Ensemble and The Dance of the Yao Tribe – CSME Silk Ensemble.
- Patty Chu’s Chinese Folk Dance Troupe performed the Ta Ge and You are Beautiful, two Chinese Folk Dances.
- OACC Artist in Residence, OngDance Company premiered their new piece called Sound of Korea.
- Kung Fu demonstrations with students and OACC teachers; the Buddhist Education Foundation (Shaolin Monks).
- Patty Chu’s Chinese Folk Dance Troupe returned to perform Happy New Year 2010 and the Graceful Peacock.
- American Center for Philippine Arts (ACPA) will closed out with Mindanoan, featuring SEED students and ACPA Music. Design, concept, and choreography by Jay Loyola.
