Seasonal Dishes Workshops

This series of eight Asian culinary workshops will focus on traditional food culture driven by seasonal and local ingredients. The aim of these workshops is to keep traditional culinary practice and food culture alive and thriving, focusing on the oral passing of knowledge and personal story telling; fostering the kind of dialogue that only happens in the kitchen. Each workshop will be followed by lunch provided by OACC and featuring the freshly made featured dish.

$5-$30 donation to cover materials, no one turned away for lack of funds, register by calling (510) 637-0462, limited to 15 participants per workshop, registration on a first come first served bases, please register at least one week prior to workshop date, all materials provided.

-May 16, 10:00am-1:30pm Banh Xeo (Vietnamese crepe) and Spring Herbs, Vietnam, by Thy Tran of the Asian Culinary Forum and Wanderingspoon.com
-June 6, 10:00am-2:00pm Demystifying Chinese Greens, China, by Linh Phu, former Chef at Millennium Restaurant in San Francisco. Please note that this workshop will begin in the grocery stores of Oakland Chinatown to see and talk about the greens and then move to OACC. Limited to 10 participants.

Film Screening: Mosque in Morgantown

Co-produced by OACC and Center for Asian American Media.

A small university town in West Virginia becomes the unlikely battleground for the soul of Islam in America when Asra Nomani fights for the right of women to pray alongside men in the local mosque. Mosque in Morgantown is a thoughtful, even-handed documentary about a community struggling with change while trying to hold itself together. Documentary directed by Brittany Huckabee.

Literary Night featuring Asian American women writers of the SF Bay Area

Produced by OACC and guest-curated by the editors of Writing the Lines of Our Hands, the first anthology of South Asian American poetry.

OACC presented its first literary night on Friday, May 29, featuring contemporary women writers highlighting their diverse Asian American heritages and the wide range of literatures: poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and cross-genre work that are their instruments of expression. This successful event was guest-curated by the editors of Writing the Lines of Our Hands, the first anthology of South Asian American poetry. The writers showcased included: Diana Ip, Summi Kaipa, Neela Banerjee, Minal Harjatwala, Aimee Suzara, Mimi Lok, and Pireeni Sundaralingam.

Asian Arts Together

Children/Family activity workshop for APA Heritage Month

Price: Free and open to the public
Children and families worked together on hands on activities including Japanese paper dolls, Japanese Daruma dolls, Cambodian theater masks, Korean kites, Lunar New Year Ox puppets, and Vietnamese dragon mobiles. Fortune tellers, calligraphy, and fruit carving demonstrations were also present!

Dances of Asia

May 30, 2009, 1-3pm
“Dances of Asia”, the performance and culminating event of OACC’s APA Heritage Festival, was a spectacular assortment of different forms of Asian dance and movement. Featured artists included OACC Artists in Residence Jay Loyola, AYPAL (Asian Pacific Islander Youth Promoting Advocacy and Leadership) Filipino Site and Kyongil Ong of Ong Dance Company, who premiered their new work. as well as performances from China’s Spirit Music Ensemble and Patty Chu’s Chinese folk dance troupe, Downefx (gay, bisexual, and lesbian people of color dance company), Sahiyar (Indian (Gujarati) Folk Dance), and martial artists from the Shaolin Buddhist Temple and Education Foundation.
