December 2009
Dearest Supporter and Friend of OACC:
When the Oakland Asian Cultural Center (OACC) was founded in 1984, there was very little Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) culture and arts programming available in Oakland Chinatown and the broader community. In the last 25 years, OACC has grown tremendously in community impact and presence through its ongoing commitment to providing quality APIA arts and culture to diverse audiences throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. To see a brief list of OACC’s achievements from the past year visit www.oacc.cc/support-us/donations.html.
As 2009 draws to an end, our goal is to raise $5,000 which will support our programs and the 25,000+ community members, artists, local organizations and institutions who benefit from our services. Your support is necessary to continue our preservation and celebration of APIA arts and heritage.
During this 25th anniversary year at OACC, we have renewed our commitment to building community with a new mission statement and three year strategic plan that aims to more effectively and creatively collaborate with local community groups, artists, and underserved populations.
Your contribution will help OACC achieve some of the following goals in 2010:
- To continue expanding our School Tour & Outreach Program to serve 20% more youth.
- To support the creation and premiere of four new works in Oakland by local artists through our Artist in Residence Program.
- To continue increasing diversity in our classes & workshops by adding classes targeting seniors, low income individuals, and new immigrants.
Both my parents were of Iraqi Jewish descent, born and raised in China… Taking these classes not only connected me to my past but also gave me the confidence to try a few Asian dishes, with excellent results. My parents were immigrants who expressed their identity through the food they cooked, and I hope future generations of Asian Americans will adopt a similar philosophy through the classes here.
