Program overview (Tentative and subject to change)
The Oakland Asian Cultural Center (OACC) honors the spirit and diversity of these traditions with the families and communities of Oakland and the San Francisco (SF) Bay Area at our annual Lunar New Year Festival. Our celebration for the Year of the Tiger will take place on the afternoon of Saturday, February 20, 2010 and will be free and open to the public. We expect more than 1,000 people to attend this three-hour long festival, including many multi-generational families. We hope you will attend and support this exciting, colorful celebration of diverse APIA cultures and communities.
Our Lunar New Year Festival will highlight Chinese, Filipino, Mongolian, and Korean cultures, with proposed performances by members of OACC’s family including adult & youth students and teachers representing some of our weekly classes such as Korean Drumming, Qi Gong, Kung Fu, Chinese Folk Dance, Guzheng, Mongolian Dance, Music and Drama and Philippine Dance and Music. Finally, OACC winter / spring 2008 - 2009 Artist in Residence Kyoungil Ong will end her artist in residence at OACC by premiering her culminating work. There will also be cultural art activities for children and families highlighting the cultures of China, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Mongolia, Tibet, and the Hmong. This will be our most pan-Asian festival to date.
Though this festival is free to the public, it is only possible to produce with your generous sponsorship. Our goal is to raise $7,500 by February 2010 to support the Festival’s production and OACC’s weekly classes. Sponsorships and donations of $25 or more will help us reach this goal and ensure that the Festival is free and accessible to the community. We ask you or your organization sponsor if you haven’t already, or continue your support if you have supported us in the past. Your contribution will ensure that the diverse arts and cultural traditions of APIA communities are available to the broader community and preserved for generations to come.
