Dear Friend and Supporter of OACC,
The Oakland Asian Cultural Center (OACC) is proud to present TAGABANUA, a dance project by Jay Loyola featuring traditional music from the Tagbanua tribe in Palawan, Philippines with dance and music artists from American Center of Philippine Arts (ACPA). TAGABANUA is tentatively scheduled to premier at OACC in May, 2012 in conjunction with OACC’s multi-event Asian Pacific American Heritage Festival.
“Taga Banua” (pronounced “tah-gah-bahn-wah”) is a Palawano word that means “from the village.” As an adopted son of the Tagbanua people, Loyola has participated in numerous rituals, dances and cultural practices. Through his research and life experience, he created this dance and music project to share the culture and rich heritage of the Tagbanua to the world and preserve the native dance forms. He hopes to use this project as a tool to assimilate his art into people’s lives and as a basis to strengthen the community and cultural identity.
The East Bay Community Foundation has graciously awarded OACC with an East Bay Fund for Artists challenge grant of $3,400 to produce this project. Every $1 donated to OACC by an individual will be matched up to $3,400 by August 20, 2011! We need your support in order to make this production happen! Your valuable contribution will also enable OACC in continuing to provide innovative and artful Asian Pacific Islander American programs and services to the San Francisco and greater East Bay community.
To make a contribution or pledge to support this project, please contact Jennifer Chu, Development Manager at (510) 637-0464 or via email at jchu@oacc.cc.
